Alier/sa has adopted an environmental-protection policy that covers all company areas, both internal and external. This is a clear example of its pursuit of sustainable development and zero waste.

Alier/sa is totally committed to improving the environment and has developed its own specific technology for obtaining paper pulp from all types of recovered paper and board, including some that are difficult to recycle, such as moisture-resistant paper, cartons for liquids, plastified board, complex board containing aluminium and other materials, oiled, waxed, laminated board, etc.

Alier/sa makes a great contribution to solving the problems of waste by:

  • Promoting the collection of used paper and board
  • Avoiding incineration.
  • Reducing the amount of waste sent to dumps.
  • Cutting down on waste-classification costs

Alier/sa contributes to reducing air, water and land pollution by:

  • Complying with Catalan Decree 319 of 15 October 1998 on air emissions before it becomes compulsory in 2003.
  • Treating its effluent using physical, chemical and biological means, in compliance with Table III of the Spanish Water Resources Regulation.
  • Minimising company waste before it is sent to the dump (plastic, primary sludge, biological sludge, etc.).
  • Using its own impermeable, duly prepared and authorised waste-disposal facilities. The company collects and treats its own leachate.

Alier/sa saves natural resources:

  •  It has it own electricity and steam cogeneration plant, which produces 24.9 MW of electricity and has a capacity of 60 MT/hour of steam. Both the electricity and steam are used in company processes.
  • By reusing the cellulose fibre of recovered paper as raw material.
  • By reusing the waste generated in the paper mill (sludge, plastic, etc.).

Promotion of Ecology in the Paper Industry

Alier/sa invites groups of students from secondary schools and higher learning centres from neighbouring counties to visit the paper mill with the aim of making them aware that the paper industry is ecological and provides for sustainable development. The company has a portable mill it uses to demonstrate the paper-recycling process. It also participates in industry exhibitions and trade fairs.
